If you decided to go “treasure-seeking” in your home, were you surprised by what you found? Hopefully you saw family treasures and memories with fresh eyes and new-found appreciation!
So what now? How do we honor those treasures in our homes? Certainly not by keeping them under lock and key, in the basement storage room, or tucked into a drawer. Incorporating those treasures can be challenging, especially if they are not necessarily reflective of your personal style and your family’s lifestyle within your home.
Here are 4 simple ways that can help keep those treasures front and center in our homes.
1. Begin a collection or enhance an existing one.
Sometimes one unique (even quirky) piece can spark an entirely new collection. Or maybe it even fits in with an existing collection you already display in your home.
Maybe your great-aunt’s hand mirror could inspire you to collect a few more?
In my case, I already collected a few unique tea cups and my grandmother sent me a couple of her own to add to my collection.
2. Elevate their status by showcasing them.
Even the quirkiest items become “art” under a glass cloche. Tuck your children’s latest clay sculptures under one and see how thrilled they are to have their masterpiece on display!
Frame simple pieces, letters, or favorite recipes. Shadow boxes are a wonderful display solution for baby shoes, military ribbons or patches, and other mementos, too. You’ll be protecting and preserving your treasure while putting it center stage.
3. Repurpose a treasure to work for your family and lifestyle.
Cut down the legs of an old table to make a casual coffee table your family can prop their feet up on.
Uncle’s old twin bed? Turn it into a stylish daybed for your child’s room or a guest space. Use your husband’s old dresser for a changing table for your new baby. Spray paint that hideous lamp your loved one had in their shag-carpeted den. Think outside the box — you’re not only honoring your treasure, you’re practicing green living and decorating, too!
4. Use them.
Polish up or paint furniture pieces and USE them! Eat off of Mom’s china, do family readings from the old family Bible, wear your favorite aunt’s watch… whatever it is, EMBRACE it!
You are blessed to have a family treasure in your home, so let it shine how ever you can.
How are YOU living with and decorating with your treasures??
