Today I’m excited to review the first legal thriller I’ve read from a Christian publishing house, The Deposit Slip. I was not disappointed!
The Deposit Slip, written by litigation attorney Todd M. Johnson, is legal thriller gold. This intriguing novel tells the story of Erin Larson, a woman in her twenties who discovers a deposit slip worth a total of over one million dollars while cleaning out her late father’s bank deposit box. Erin searches high and low for an attorney who will take her case and ends up working with an attorney who is financially at the end of his rope after losing a big case. He decides to take the case, against his better judgment. Pitted against one of Minnesota’s most prestigious law firms, he becomes the subject of unethical blackmail and legal bullying.
Set in a small town in Minnesota, this book has everything you would want in a fast paced thriller. I think I read it cover-to-cover in two to three days. The characters are down-to-earth and very realistic and the legal elements are spot on and don’t present too much of a stretch (of course they are, the author is an experienced litigation attorney). If you know nothing about the law, I think you’ll still enjoy this book because of the characters and suspense. I was cheering for the underdog attorney the entire time!
I wondered how a litigation attorney writing a Christian fiction novel set against a legal mystery would pull it off. The themes of Christianity are definitely apparent in the novel but they are not overt. The author did an admirable job of portraying the themes of restoration and redemption while writing a fast-paced intriguing novel. I’m really hoping for a second novel in this series as I miss the characters and want to see what happens to them! This would be a great book to read in the fall as it is set in fall/winter in Minnesota.
