In church last week, our pastor said that a telltale sign of a Christian is their reaction to fear. And more specifically where Christians place their hope when things get scary.
Do we place it in the things of this world? Or do we place it in the big, beautiful promise of a future far better than what we can imagine on this earth?
Where we place our hope when we face fear defines us as Christian women.
I can’t think of anything more terrifying than an unknown future. As I think about my own and the days that I have before me, I am more than a little scared. I’m expecting our first child — due October 30 — and as much as I have it “all figured out” I really have no idea what to expect. I’m afraid of what I know (I think pregnant women should have Web MD blocked on their computers). But it’s the things I haven’t even thought about yet… that’s what scares me the most.
But as hard as it is sometimes, I have faith in a known God, a God that’s bigger than my worries and fears, however crippling they may be. I give my future over to him, because frankly, it’s too big for me to think about. And luckily I don’t have to.
As Christians, I think we have a responsibility to witness this hope, to be an example, and to rise above our fear of the future. To show that because of the work on the cross, our futures, our eternal futures, are going to be glorious. Let’s put our hope there, shall we!?
