Fear in decor? You bet. It probably sounds ridiculous, but I can’t tell you how many times I read comments or hear people say: “I would never be that brave to try THAT in my home!”
It’s scary to make bold choices. It’s safer to keep those solid fabrics, those matching pillows, that one large piece of artwork on the wall that’s been there for fifteen years. Don’t get me wrong… there’s nothing WRONG with having those things as part of your home decor. But are they really expressive of who you are, what your passions are, how you live your life in your home?
If the answer is “yes”, good for you!!
But if the answer is “not really,” I’m here to embolden you. To encourage you to step out of your decorating box. Are you ready?
Consider small risks. The not-expensive kind of risks. Do this by asking yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen? You might have to repaint that room if your bold (for you) choice doesn’t pan out. You may have to put a little spackel over that nail hole for the art work you didn’t care for. Or you may have to return that pillow that you just don’t love like you’d hoped you would.
Not one earth-shattering repercussion.
But what if… you absolutely love that color on the back of your front door…
What if you can’t believe you waited so long to take it from a white primed surface to the one thing that pulls the whole space together and makes your heart smile every time you walk into your entry?
Start a Pinterest board of what would be your bold choices (if you need an invite, let me know!). Paint colors, upholstery fabric, gallery walls, furniture layouts, window treatments… whatever strikes your fancy but you are fearful to try. Maybe it’s a fun fuchsia Ikat chair…
Go ahead and pin away. To your heart’s content. What better place to explore your fearless decorating side than on Pinterest, a virtual bulletin board? Then go back every few days and add to it, ponder your previous choices for a few minutes while you’re there. Eventually, start thinking intentionally about your pins… what speaks to you about each of them? And how could you translate THAT into a small risk?
Be bold. Have FAITH in yourself. In your likes and dislikes, in what speaks to you. You don’t have to be foolish to be brave in your decorating. I’ll be sharing some of my most fearless decor choices and projects in the weeks ahead. But now I want to hear from you… what are your decorating fears?
