Maybe you are like me. You live, you exist, but something is missing. You know God is there, but where is He? Honestly, I think we get to these dry places on our own steam. Lots of it. Steam steam steam, stress stress stress, and plenty of striving and work.
We can’t keep going like this!
God spent 6 days making creation and what did He do on that 7th day? He rested. Have you ever read the 10 commandments? You know that list of God rules in Exodus and Deuteronomy? The 5th one; it says to remember and observe the Sabbath day, the day of rest.
We tend to know 1-4 and 6-10 and then we skip over the middle!
When we rest in God, we take time to have his Spirit in our life. God renews us and that which was barren becomes fertile ground for learning, growth, and life. The noise of our busy lives are quieted and all of the sudden we hear God. We hear God because we stopped striving and decided to trust our Sabbath and our life in his capable hands.
Make one step towards obeying God in this command for a Sabbath.
Today, set apart fifteen minutes for God. Rest in God. Stop. Trust in his sufficiency. Don’t strive for anything. In those fifteen minutes, you let God be God and allow Him to reign fully. You’ll be amazed how refreshing those fifteen minutes are. You might even decide to seek God’s will about keeping the Sabbath for an entire day.
What a restful thought.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. – Exodus 20:8-11 ESV
