Every year, I have this same internal struggle. How can I capture the magic of the holidays with my camera without being glued behind the lens? No one wants to be THAT person, with a camera in everyone’s face– but then how do you have those moments captured to share and look back on?
The holidays are an important time for traditions, family, and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. However, it is also a busy time of year– between school schedules, class parties, Christmas programs, baking, gift shopping, gift wrapping, and any other thing I didn’t mention, I am sure your December calendar is just as busy as mine! So how do we balance this busy time of year while still having precious moments captured?
Lower your expectations. This was a HUGE one for me. Normally, I would go into the holiday season wanting to document everything little thing that was even slightly related to Christmas. Putting up the tree, baking, and wrapping gifts– you name it, I wanted proof that it happened. I was so wound up in capturing the moment, that I didn’t live in the moment– and then I realized that having the memory was somewhat better than the photographic evidence. It was more vivid, I could smell the candles I had burning, taste the peanut clusters my mom was making, and hear the sound of my grandpa cut caramels.
Say no. In the midst of all the holiday happenings, I have to remember to say no to some things. Would it be awesome if every year, we took an entire weekend to go cut down our own tree, decorate it like the next best thing on Pinterest, and had all of our friends over for a holiday party? It would! Any maybe one day, we can do that! But in this season, my boxed, pre-lit tree, and falling into a heap at the end of the day is as close as I will get! It is hard to say no, but I have learned that by giving myself grace, I can fully enjoy the things that I did say yes to–AND capture them!
Always bring your camera with. You can’t take photos if you don’t have the equipment, right? I always bring my camera along, and if the timing feels right, I will get it out. If not, and I would rather just relax and enjoy? I can do that, too. I release myself from the pressure and am able to soak it all in!
You don’t have to be the paparazzi, but you will want memories capture at some point. Enjoy this holiday season, and try to soak it all in!
