February is upon us! The month in which we celebrate love and all the forms it takes in our relationships. We send cards, make treats, and in general show the love on that one day. And some of us decorate our homes with reminders of the occasion…
I don’t normally decorate for Valentine’s Day. I prefer to decorate seasonally. But for some reason, this year, I found myself longing to put little touches that celebrate love around my home.
This is what I tell you to do: Love each other just as I have loved you. ~John 15:12
Let us help each other to love others and to do good. ~Hebrews 10:24
Notice that in both of those verses, “love” is a verb – an action word. And while celebrating “love” as something we give and receive is wonderful and love should be celebrated and appreciated, we are directed by Christ to love. To actively and intentionally love one another.
Even when it’s hard. And even when the person we’re supposed to love doesn’t seem very lovable. Our spouses, our siblings, our children, our co-workers, that sour waitress at the sandwich shop, that driver that cut you off in rush hour traffic. Yes, them. Each and every one of them are those we are directed to love.
We weren’t loveable when God sent his Only Son to die for our sins and offer us a new covenant. We were broken sinners, flawed in every way imaginable. And yet, He loved us anyway. He still loves us anyway. Actively and intentionally. Forgiving us at every turn. Offering new mercies each and every morning.
And He doesn’t just love us and show us His love on one day of the month or during one month of the year. He loves us 24/7/365. Never ceasing, never giving up on us. In fact, pursuing us! And that’s how He wants US to love one another. Unceasingly. Actively. Intentionally.
And the reason is simple…
And now we have these three: faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love. ~ 1 Cor 13:13
Our greatest chance to make a difference — any difference at all in this crazy messed up world — is love. Pure and simple. To soften the hardest heart and brighten the darkest soul. It’s all about love.
So this year, I’m going to leave my Valentine’s Day decor up all year long. Because I need that daily reminder to love. Some days it will be easy to love. And some days it will be hard. But He directs me to love. And love I will.
What reminders can you put in your home to love each and every day?
Be blessed, friends… I have loved being back with you these last three months. You can find me blogging about home, decor, and a multitude of other things at Decor & More. Hope to see you there.
