The refreshing breeze that wafts through my open windows in the early days of spring carries with it a desire to freshen up our home décor. The promise of a new beginning inspires crisp colors and simplicity. I would like to share with you how I introduced a fresh new color and details that you can do too.
My living room consisted mainly of tan, brown, white, gray, and shades of aqua, robin’s egg blue, and teal. It’s a comforting and calm palette. With the arrival of spring, I felt the need to add a little spice to the space with coral. Where does one even begin to add a new accent color? I started with the color wheel. Coral is essentially a complimentary color to the blues in my room. For me, the key is to carry the new color throughout the room. The kicker here though is that I am
cheap, errrr, frugal. So, what did I do?
To spend the least amount of money on this little spruce up, I asked myself the question, “What can be done with what is on hand for the most impact?”. I had a couple of bronze permanent markers and I figured I could make some sort of shape out of cardboard to trace on my wall. I decided on a modified honeycomb type pattern that I drew, cut out, and then did a few practice runs on some scrap plywood to be sure that I would like the pattern. I apologize that this isn’t more scientific, I’m just a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl! I basically just lined it up on my wall and traced away. It took less than an hour! It is subtle and the metallic sheen is highlighted depending on where you stand in the room. I also love that the bronze marker on the brown paint lends a rosy hue to introduce a hint of coral.
One of my favorite ways to add some color and pattern to a space is with accent pillows. I’ve made my own in the past by buying fabric by the yard and then proceeded to spend several hours sewing and stuffing away. It’s rewarding and the results are satisfying. For this little spring freshening though, I didn’t intend to spend a lot of time or money. Hobby Lobby sells pillow covers that zip over an existing pillow and they happened to be 50% off this past week, and they HAPPENED to have a fabulous coral chevron. Sold! I bought four pillow covers for $4.50 each. I was able to toss some coral all around my room in an instant! Here is the other side of the room: Also while at Hobby Lobby, I snagged a $1 bottle of acrylic craft paint in Coral Blush. I wasn’t entirely sure exactly what I would do with it, but knew that a little paint can go a long way! I ended up drybrushing a picture frame with it and then adding a sweet print. You can also snag this adorable print from Nicole Joelle for free! There are also TONS of free printables that you can find by searching pinterest. Here are two others that I intend to add to my living room:
For a punch of color across the room, I also brushed a coat of the coral craft paint on a little owl that I picked up at the thrift shop for $.75. I perched him on my pallet word art. So, did you keep track of how much I spent? $19.75. Less than twenty bucks! I hope that you’ve gained a little bit of inspiration to freshen up your own space this spring! Enjoy!
