My dad is probably one of the most seemingly fearless people I have ever known, right next to my mom. My dad is a crop dusting pilot (or aerial applicator) which is one of the most dangerous jobs you can have I am pretty sure. Flying at speeds of 175 mph, 6 feet above corn and soybean fields, with power lines and other obstacles takes a LOT of skill…and guts. But it is something my dad has always had a passion for, and he is happiest in the cockpit of his airplane.
When I was 14, my dad was driving a semi, hauling grain in Western Nebraska where we lived. He always wanted to make a career out of aviation, but wasn’t sure how. After finally getting to go to agricultural aviation school, his boss found that a small airport in Central Illinois was looking for a new manager. We came to visit, and though my parents knew we would have to start from scratch, God prompted them in a huge way. That following summer, my family of 5, plus the cat and the goldfish, made the 850 mile trip with everything we owned…and started over.
That first summer, my dad sprayed 850 acres. To put that into perspective, my dad’s airplane now can do around 2,000 acres per DAY on a good day– so that was a very, very slow start. Gradually, they have built their business, and the summer of 2007, their business boomed in a huge way. It was as if the Lord was saying “Thank you for being obedient.” It paid off.
Now, there is a LOT more to this story- lots of hardships, tragedy, and loss. Stories of frustration and anger and asking God “Why?”. But most of all, this story is about a man who took the call of the Lord no matter the circumstance, and in turn followed his dream.
James 1:12 : 12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
