My thighs are my troubled half and believe me, they carry at least half of my body weight.
About twice a year, I go on a reconnaissance mission to take back my legs – once in the spring when I know beach season looms near and once again in the fall when I try to squeeze back into my jeans.
Liposuction has always been a consideration; however, I’ve never been able to fully convince my insurance company that cellulite of the thighs is correlated to sudden death.
They don’t realize I am doing squats at death’s door.
Over the years (and through gasps for breath), I’ve learned a few things about exercise for everyday, regular women like me, and probably most of you.
I have a bad habit of turning into a couch slug in the winter. Bloggers are especially at risk for this. It’s so easy to snuggle down into the cushions, open my laptop and call it work. I can almost feel my backside spreading with each article I write.
If you’re doing nothing in the area of exercise, I encourage you to get up and get active. It doesn’t matter so much what you do as long as you do something, anything.
Go, get active!
We’re cheering you on.
Once you’ve gotten off the couch and started exercising, make sure you are consistent.
Experts say it takes anywhere from two weeks to a month of doing something in order to form a habit. Unfortunately, it only takes about two days to fall off the bandwagon and break that habit, so be consistent.
Determine to make a change beginning today and then stick with your decision.
The more your body moves, the more it will want to move.
Exercise doesn’t have to be torture. Why not make it fun?
Here are a few suggestions to make exercise more enjoyable:
- Do it with a friend.
- Listen to music.
- Listen to an audio book.
- Watch your favorite TV show (while exercising!).
- Fellowship with God.
- Enjoy nature.
- Sign up for a Color Run or a Mud Run.
Go on An Adventure
When I was a child, my grandmother would take myself, my brother, and my cousin on walks after school. We lived in the city and she would let us take turns choosing the way at each corner. I loved when it was my turn to choose left, right, or straight. It was always an adventure.
Take your kids on an adventure, either on foot or on bicycle.
Perhaps you can even turn your adventure into a scavenger hunt or sorts. There are all kinds of interesting things to look for in nature.
Think Outside the Gym Box
A fancy gym membership isn’t required in order to exercise. You can move and have fun anyplace, anytime. Ok, maybe not anytime, but you can certainly make time by scheduling exercise into your day.
Many YMCA’s offer family swim times, some towns and state parks have hiking trails, and if all else fails, you can always have a dance party at home.
If you live in an area with extreme weather, many malls open early for walkers.
You’ve heard it said, “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. Well, where there’s an out of shape body, there’s a way to work it back into shape.
I’m not a fitness expert. I’m just an everyday woman who dreads the thought of swimsuit shopping and is waiting for the skinny jean trend to run its course, but I know I need to be active, consistent, and have some fun.
I hope these 5 tips will help motivate you be active and think outside the gym box.
