hi, i’m andrea and i’m new here. do you want to be friends?
sounds easy to say but do you remember being that kid in school, just wanting a friend to do flips with on the bars at recess? oh my, it was frightening at times, right? thankfully i already feel like family in this amazing group of ladies and i hope that all you readers will welcome me in the same way…i think we’re going to like each other!
;
it’s true, today is my first day here at fancy little things and i’m beyond excited to be here!
are you ready to get your style on?
then please, with no further delay, give a warm welcome to
helloSTYLE is my way of saying LET’S DO THIS! let’s get dressed and not just wear our clothes. let’s play with colors, mix it up, try new things and break some rules.
today we’re going to take it easy. i’m keeping the homework to a minimum. just enough to get you thinking. thinking about what you have and not what you don’t have. as a young adult, getting started on my own, my mom taught me a valuable tip that i still repeat to myself when i shop for clothes: buy staple pieces. pieces that never go out of style and that go with many other items you already have. once you have that foundation, you can buy fun pieces and accessories!
let’s take this outfit for example: (from polyvore and found on pinterest, which you will find that i reference for much of my inspiration). this outfit has many staple pieces that can easily mix and match with other pieces.
of the 9 items in this outfit, how many of them do you have that are similar? (and i really mean similar, not exactly these items.)
me? i have the following:
jeans: check
white tee: check
gray cardi: check
black belt: check
black dangly earrings: check
long silver chain: check
black flats: check
black and silver bangles: nope
black purse: nope
i would say that this outfit would be pretty easy to pull off, wouldn’t you? even if you only had the jeans, shirt, cardi and shoes, it’d still be pretty darn cute. but think of the possibilities if you just added a belt? and guess what?…it doesn’t have to match your shoes! (we’ll be covering this in future posts where we will be BUSTING fashion myths.)
another example (and one i do most regularly) is not as easy but it is super fun! =)
since i can’t replicate this one exactly, putting my own spin on it was pretty right on, i think!
black blouse-y shirt: check
floral print skirt with black background: check
black tights: check
red belt: opted for brown instead
brown shoes: opted for red instead
long necklace chain with medallion: opted for red beads instead
top bun: opted for a braided pony instead (see the tutorial here)
my point to all this is that there are a ton of ideas in the style world and you can make any of them work for you, by using what you have in your closet already. and you don’t have to buy that $200 pair of jeans or all new accessories to do it.
when i pin outfits to my style and fashion board, i make sure i have at least 2 items in the outfit that i can use as the foundation. this way, i am not discouraged by not having the entire outfit, even though i may love the whole thing. 😉
your homework: if you’re on pinterest, first, follow me =) then create a style board for yourself. the next time you’re scrolling around, pin an outfit that has at least 2 things you already have. (extra credit for picking an item that you haven’t worn in a while.)
now, when you’re standing in front of your closet full of clothes and you’re thinking that you have nothing to wear, pull out those items you pinned earlier and find some way to wear them. and really wear them. wear them with confidence.
i want to give you the tools to shop in your own closet.
;
now go put on something cute and we’ll chat again next week!
