As for me & my house, well…it is very male dominated.
I married a man. We birthed four sons. My two female Newfoundlands are the only addition to the female quotient besides myself.
Most of my growing-up years were spent with just my Mom. I have two brothers, but they were entering college as I learned how to ride a bike. For the most part, I’ve never lived with men.
Until now.
And I know it is only just beginning. My oldest son is only 5. I shutter at the thought of sharing our one and only full size bathroom with 5 men. I’m quite certain it would be more economical for me to buy and milk a cow than to continue to run & stock an extra fridge in the garage just for the gallons of milk they require in a week. A recent purchase of a “My First Trampoline” for my 2-year-old has actually become a UFC cage fighting ring. And ‘wrestle time with Daddy’ at my house is completely insane. I’m surprised I still have a single lamp in my livingroom.
But, I love my boys and I love my man. And to love them the best I can, I’ve become a student of men. I desire to learn all I can about this foreign, fantastic and frightening specimen of God’s creation.
If you’d like to learn more to better understand the males in your life, then here are three names to remember….
John Eldredge
Robert Lewis
Rick Johnson
Each of these men have created ministries and written books to help men discover their divine purpose as males and feel the call toward authentic manhood. We have a stash of their books at our house, and they aren’t just for my husband to read. I would recommend them to anyone who lives with a man, loves a man and desires to help the men around them be the courageous men of character that God intends them to be, including Moms who hope to raise their boys into Godly men.
These would also make GREAT gifts for Father’s Day! (Images are linked to and summaries were taken from Christianbooks.com.)
Every boy wants to be a hero. He wants to be powerful, he wants to be dangerous, he wants to know … ‘Do I have what it takes?’ Conversely, every girl wants to believe that she is captivating and worth fighting for. She wants to know … ‘Am I lovely?’ Only you, Dad, can answer those questions. That makes you the most powerful man in your child’s life. Now with a new cover, this booklet will show that You Have What It Takes.
Men, do life’s changes seem perplexing? Using biblical examples, best-selling author Eldredge shows how God guides your spiritual and personal growth through six stages of manhood—beloved son, cowboy, warrior, lover, king, and sage. You’ll discover how to love freely and mentor your own sons.
Using the customs of pursuing knighthood in the medieval era, author Robert Lewis draws parallels to achieving manhood today. It’s a meticulous process that requires vision, goals and an uncompromising character. Inside this book, you’ll find solid advice to help you courageously lead your son into a biblical masculinity that will impact others.
Why are boys so different? Why would a trip to the garbage dumb be such a highlight in a boy’s life? What do boys need to learn in order to become good men? A mother’s influence on her sons is unique and valuable, but sometimes moms don’t understand what makes their boys tick. They want to help their sons grow up to become men of honor and integrity, but that’s a tremendous challenge. With refreshing honesty and a man’s insight, author Rick Johnson offers the advice, understanding, and support every mom is looking for when it comes to raising godly sons. Using extensive research and humorous personal experiences, he addresses tough issues such as communication, discipline, sexuality, and respect.
From commitment and courage to honesty and humility, let the founder of Better Dads help you to become the father God designed you to be! Stressing significance of male bonding, Johnson discusses discipline, spiritual leadership, purity, respect and self-control as well as the top ten mistakes to avoid in raising your sons.
Use your influence as a woman to help your man become his very best. Rick Johnson helps women use their powers of persuasion to deal creatively with the little annoying habits that drive her crazy while concentrating on building upon his strong points. No nagging or guilt trips allowed!
(This is what I want to become.)
Later this month, FancyLittleThings will be celebrating the men in our lives! One day on Father’s Day just isn’t enough, so join us for {MAN WEEK} from June 18th to June 23rd!
