“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14)
I feel like I’ve been boasting lately. Great marriage. Great husband. Great anniversary. And they all really are great.
But, I feel I need to clarify something.
Nothing is great because of me. Or my husband.
It is all because of my great God.
You see, when it was up to me and my husband, we failed miserably. I have nothing, nothing, to share with you on the topic of marriage. I was a bad wife in a bad marriage to a bad husband.
No one would have known that. No one would have said that. Even we probably wouldn’t have categorized our relationship as bad. But that was before we knew great.
Once you experience great, even mediocre is bad.
Mediocre can actually be worse than bad, because you don’t think it is bad, and you don’t do anything to make it better.
You want to know how we got to great? How we shook off mediocre, climbed out of bad and have soared to new marital heights that we never even knew were possible?
Everyone wants the simple answer. The simple step-by-step. I’d write a book and share it, but that Book has already been written.
You want to know what we did?
STEP 1: We got on our knees. We told God we had seriously screwed up what we had promised before Him and our family & friends to do. We asked him to forgive us for being so selfish, so stubborn. We gave up…and gave over.
STEP 2: Repeat as necessary. (If you’re wondering, that is at least daily.)
Seems too simple, right? He is just that great.
“Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:31)
