My mom was a busy lady. Single mom. Two jobs. Lots of responsibility. Lots of things to take care of.
And I remember that nearly every day she would come in from work around 5:30 or 6, lay on the couch and catch just a few minutes of rest before kicking into dinner and all the evening chores.
Rest. Our face-paced world doesn’t allow much of it. All the more reason that we, as parents, need to teach it.
Our heavenly parent thinks rest is important. He is God. He can do all things, and yet, He still took a day to rest. It was His way of teaching us to rest.
Many fellow Moms are amazed that my 5-year old son still naps. So does my 4-year-old, 2-year-old, 9 month old and their Mama too, on most days. If it is a Sunday, we rest as a family. Don’t bothering calling from 1 to 3 PM. We won’t answer. We won’t even hear it because the phones are turned off. In the Peters house, nap time is sacred.
I recently came across this quote in the book I’m reading with my bible study gals, Having a Mary Heart in Martha World by Joanna Weaver…
“Because I hadn’t developed the habit of quiet time as a child, when the busyness of adulthood came, I found it difficult to find time alone with the Lord.”
It is what made me first think that I am teaching rest. Teaching them how to be quiet (not an easy lesson for 4 preschool/toddler boys). It is part of a spiritual discipline that I want to instill in my family.
Now, I’m the busy lady. Mom of four. Lots of things to take care of.
All the more reason to rest. 🙂
What do you do in your house to teach rest?
