My Aunt Jane & Uncle Gary were at our home visiting last week. They are some of our favorite ‘house’ guests because they bring their own house! They came with camper in tow, invited all 4 of the kids and me out to their ‘place’ for breakfast and made dinner for us on their last night here.
Their marriage is one that I have watched over my lifetime. I spent many a days and nights with them over my childhood. They have two daughters who were near the same age as me and lived a mile up the road until we moved when I was 11. I went to their house after school, spent my summers at their camp. They even took me to my Uncle’s company Christmas parties under the cover of their 3rd child.
I’ve been close enough to their marriage to know that it hasn’t been a perfect one (but whose is?). As they’ve hit their later years of life together, what I see in their relationship that I treasure is the companionship they share.
This is really true of any long standing marriage that I’ve watched. The element that always makes me smile is their companionship together. The friendship, shared interests, time spent traveling, shopping, doing whatever. Even that quiet comfortableness as they watch TV together, one snoring, the other knitting.
This is one of the treasures of marriage. One of the rewards for the years of hard work, raising kids, maintaining homes, working jobs. They are entering their retirement years together. They pack up the camper and are off to visit new places and old friends, or maybe old places and new friends.
Don’t we all dream of being that couple holding hands in side-by-side rocking chairs watching the sunset on our lives and knowing we’ve honored God through our commitment and He’s rewarded us with a lifelong friend, a true & holy companion?
That is my dream. Maybe I’ll even be able to convince Dave to buy us a little camper :-).
Do you treasure companionship in your marriage? What does companionship mean to you?
