Starting a blog is exciting and fun, but sometimes naming your blog is a whole lot of work.
When I considered joining the ranks of bloggers, I knew absolutely nothing about blogging and even less about the technical side of social media. To me, the internet was mostly for shopping, Facebook, and Googling the occasional stomach symptom only to find out I have three tumors, four kinds of cancer, and a toothache.
I was a brand new blog convert.
I needed to learn how to blog, so I did what any person of an average IQ would do, I bought a book for dummies; however, I still needed a name for my blog and they didn’t have a dummies book for that.
3 Things To Consider When Naming Your Blog
1. Blog names should be catchy.
You want to give your blog a name people can bring up in conversation. Word of mouth is how I found out about The Pioneer Woman and decided to become a blogger myself.
Take a week or two to toss around some names, run them by a few friends and check to see if anyone else is already blogging under that name.
2. Ideally you want your blog name to begin with one of the first few letters of the alphabet.
Blogs always end up listed in alphabetical order, so if your blog begins with an A, B, C, or D, readers are more likely to click on your blog than if your blog begins with a T.
Perhaps you might call your blog something that begins with an A.
This is just a suggestion, not a hard fast rule. My blog is The Domestic Fringe. I’m always at the bottom of everyone’s list, but if I had it to do all over again, I would stick with the same name. Being near the end of the alphabet hasn’t really held me back.
Just keep in mind where your blog will fall in a list and plan accordingly.
3. The name of your blog should convey a message.
Your blog’s name should give your reader an idea of what your blog is about.
If you have a photography blog, think of a name that will give readers a clue. Same with a food or fashion related blog.
You’ll have to be creative when naming your blog. There are a whole bunch of blogs out there and you want yours to be noticed and remembered.
Don’t rush into picking a name. Take your time, run your ideas past a few trusted confidants, and be sure to search the internet to find out if someone else is already using your name.
Your name says a lot about you and it’s the first thing your readers will see. You want it to represent you well.
