I love reading photography blogs, and finding out what equipment others are using. Not only is it fun, but it gives me an idea of what lenses to look into, what flash they are using that works well, and what bag is good for the amount of gear they have. Today, I am letting you all peek into my camera bag and see what’s inside– what works for me and what I LOVE!
1. Jo Totes Gracie bag in mint
2. Canon 5D Mark II with Canon 50mm 1.8 lens attached
3. Yongnuo YN-560 Speedlite Flash
4. bobby pins (you never know when a client will need one!)
5. Tamron AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 lens for Canon
6. Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens for Canon
7. Gussy Sews pouch holding extra memory cards
8. Extra camera battery and charger
9. Business cards
10. suckers– for those kiddos that need an extra boost for cooperating!
My first DSLR was a Canon, and when I upgraded, I stayed with Canon since my lenses were Canon compatible. I have never used a Nikon, so I have no preference! I think there is a line between “it takes a great photographer to get a great image” and “you must have the latest and greatest and a lens for every situation”. The right equipment definitely helps, but I also believe that you can take a great photo without spending your life savings for equipment.
That being said, my equipment is definitely viewed as an investment, but carefully selected for what I use it for. Typically, I do children and family portraits, document my own family, and recently a couple of weddings. My gear allows me to do these well while still giving me creative freedom.
As you build your camera bag, keep track of what you do and don’t have and prioritize what you DO need to what you could save for later on. Good luck!
